Sorry Bill, that sucks.
I only had 4 entries and not the prime categories so was able to get them entered. Seems like some clubs are going all out for competitions! Already 1190 paid entries in less than 7.5 hours.

Re: Liquid Calcium Chloride
I am using brewersfriend for my water calculations and it does not have an option for liquid CaCL, only a choice of anhydrous or dihydrate. I did go to LDCarlson storefront and they have the spec sheet available, and it lists it at Anhydrous. If that is correct them I have been selecting the wrong f...

Re: Yeast Pitch Stratification
I brew in stainless as well, plus pitch the yeast in the kettle like we do on the big rig since I use multiple ball lock kegs as fermenters.
Do you oxygenate afer pitching the yeast? I would think that would do some mixing.

Re: Kettle Sour pH Change Post Boil
With all the brewday activity on the big rig, I completely forgot about checking pre and post boil ph. Would be interested in the results if you test this on your next batch.

I did a starter last year on a pack that was 9 months past manufacture date. The first 24 hours saw 0 activity, then went about normal.

Re: Poll about Yeast Starters
Played around with the BrewersFriend yeast calculator and it definitely is an additional volume.James Smith wrote: ↑Wed Mar 29, 2023 7:40 amI've always considered it additional volume, but that is a great question.Terry Olinger wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 9:02 pm On 2nd or 3rd steps, is the volume the total volume or additional volume for the step up?

Re: Poll about Yeast Starters
A question when doing multi step starters in the calculators (using brewersfreind but probably applies to all). On 2nd or 3rd steps, is the volume the total volume or additional volume for the step up? For example: If you calculate a 1st step of 2 liters and a 2nd step of 4.5 liters, is the volume a...

That would be something to test on Sunday on the big rig with the belgian wit. Check boil kettle ph pre and post boil and see if there is a similar drop.

Re: Terry's Topo Chico
Smitty, at the high carbonation level for Topo Chico, the chalk does dissolve 100% (at the concentration I used for the recipe). The last Link I had in the article is his calculations and test of dissolving chalk in water and what CO2 pressure is needed. He also has a chart comparing mash pH when ad...

Re: Terry's Topo Chico
I generally don't worry about temporary hardness and alkalinity when I am brewing. I also never use chalk in brewing either. I wanted to get as close to the Topo Chico profile as I could to duplicate the taste, so went with chalk addition. I have just started reading the water book, wanting to find ...

Re: Yeast Starter Calculators/Models
I've been using Brewersfriend for everything (recipes, water calcs, yeast calcs). Their yeast calculator uses the Braukaiser model for the first step, and the Chris White model for the subsequent steps. In their discussion about the calculations, they note Braukaiser should only be used with stir pl...

Re: American IPA Recipe
I like using Brewing Classic Styles as a starting point as well, but be aware of the specialty grain percentages when transferring all grain recipe into beersmith/brewersfriend/etc, especially if scaling up the volume. The percentages they list for specialty grains is the weight percentage of the ex...

Saturday meetup suggestions
For September 2022, we will not have a Saturday meetup due to multiple beer events already occurring ( Labor of Love, Addison Octoberfest, club Brew Day). And we do not currently have one planned for October since we will have the fall party. If you have any suggestions for future Saturday meetups, ...

I have not brewed on the system before and will be taking it for a test brew today (I work for Eric at the shop). O...

I have been looking to upgrade my homemade CP filler and finally got a chance to borrow a TapCooler to try out. I tried it out this morning and it work...
