Efficiency: Brewhouse, Mash,Conversion and Extract

Post by Jimmy Orkin »

This topic started with my scaling a recipe with Beersmith. Beersmith has that option to match gravity, color and bitterness. I don't know what Beersmith does with that option. I did figure out that if the "efficiency" is different in the from and to equipment profiles, Beersmith adjusts the amount of my malts, adding additional character malt when the "to" efficiency is higher than the "from" efficiency.

So I started digging around looking at efficiency and found Brewhouse, Mash, Conversion and Extract efficiency. I still need to understand mash, conversion and extract efficiency as they relate to mashing and sparging. If anyone has a firm handle on these efficiencies I would like to discuss with you.

Removed the discussion on moving to Batch Sparging to a separate topic.

More on this topic as I explore it. What do you think?

Here is a link to the Braukaiser site that discusses mash related efficiencies:

The braukaiser site is a great site that Kai Troester created. It seems that Kai has stopped updating his site.
